Questions And Answers
| Q: |
Can FreeUndelete get back my deleted file(s)? |
| A: |
The effective way to find out if a file is recoverable is to try FreeUndelete on it. Please, visit the FreeUndelete download page to obtain a completely free copy of the software.
It is strongly recommended to minimize (and whenever possible, stop) any activity on the disk where the files are to be undeleted from! |
| Q: |
When trying to undelete files I receive the "Cannot undelete To Drive letter:" error message. What is the problem with? |
| A: |
Specifying the same location for both deleted and recovered files is not allowed, as this could overwrite the deleted files completely and make them inaccessible for recovery procedure. |
| Q: |
The desired files have been restored by FreeUndelete, but the appropriate application states that the files are corrupted. Why does this happen? |
| A: |
Unfortunately, the files have been damaged before you restored it. Most probably, they have been overwritten by binary data from hard drive or RAM. Expect this if FreeUndelete has marked the status of the file as 'poor' or 'average'.
Corrupted files can be sometimes recovered with the help of one of the Recoveronix software tools. Please, visit the Products page for the full list of the recovery products. |
| Q: |
I have only one hard drive available. Is there a way to undelete files from this location using FreeUndelete? |
| A: |
It is impossible to use the same drive as a source and destination for files' undelete. However, you can use removable hard or flash drives. |

| Q: |
FreeUndelete Error: Not enough disk space. |
| A: |
To fix this problem you need to set temporary directory to the drive with free space available (2-3 times of the original file size). Fix the Windows environment variable to use it. Do the following:
- Open System in Control Panel.
- On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables, then click the name of the user variable (TEMP or TMP) you want to change.
- Click Edit to change value.
- Set path to the location where temporary data should be stored (e.g., e:\).
- Restart computer for changes to take in effect.
- Run the software again.
You can also use the special environment variable called OFFICERECOVERY_TMP to set the directory where FreeUndelete should store its temporary files. Use the method shown above to add/edit environment variable. |
